Education/Training

The DataLab is also exploring remote and virtual capacities in view of the Covid19 situation and will be ready to put those in place at the commencement of your capstone.

Capstone Program

DataLab in collaboration with its partners offers to students practical training on applied data science projects combining capstone courses and internship activities in a year-long experience.

Capstones are applied data science projects partnering Mason undergraduate or graduate student teams co-advised by a Mason faculty or research advisor with external data science stakeholders that are looking to address complex data-intensive problems.

Capstone projects can be quantitative and be approached using a range of data science and informatics methodologies and/or qualitative focusing on making sense of results and using them to address domain-related problems.

Student teams possess a combination of data science skills and a range of academic studies (such as policy, humanities, urban, health, social sciences, marketing, and more) allowing them to experience data science through a multidisciplinary lens. Capstones provide practical experiential learning opportunities by engaging students in real-world business, scientific, or societal challenges, while contributing to sponsors technical and data science workforce.

Project Sponsor Expectations

Project sponsors complete the Capstone Project Application and identify a primary Point of Contact for the project who will ensure regular feedback on the students’ work, through periodic meetings and review of progress reports and presentations; and will be able to attend the final project presentations. The specific expectations and time commitment will vary by the needs of the specific project, but we would anticipate that the project sponsor be able to commit 1-2 hours every week to the above activities.

Security of Datasets

Mason offers a secure research data environment with datasets, tools, and expert staff to provide research support services to students, faculty, and partners’ data.

Student(s) Assignment of Capstone Projects

Capstone project group selection methods will be based on several criteria including students ranked preferences.  Demographics and competencies will also be considered in order to ensure group cohesion and diversity of capabilities.

Students in the DataLab

DataLab welcomes students from a broad range of disciplines who are fascinated with the possibilities of turning big and complex data to knowledge. By joining DataLab, students can:

  • Practice skills used to communicate their ideas
  • Build on career paths
  • Enhance their educational experiences through internships, cooperative work experiences, and other personalized training options
